Why the 2026 CX-70 Deserves Your Attention in British Columbia

If you're shopping for a two-row SUV that balances power, efficiency, and premium features, the 2026 Mazda CX-70 is worth a closer look. This model carries over the 2025 redesign with thoughtful updates - including an expanded plug-in hybrid lineup and a striking new paint colour. The CX-70 offers strong capability and refinement for daily commutes, weekend getaways, and longer road trips across the province.

What's New for 2026?

The 2026 CX-70 introduces three new plug-in hybrid trims: GS SC, GS-L SC, and Signature, giving buyers more choice for electric-only driving on short trips with gas-engine range for longer journeys. All models now feature gloss black Mazda emblems and black rear badges for a sportier look. A new Deep Crystal Blue Mica paint finish is available on select trims, including GT and GT-P.

The core design and platform remain unchanged from 2025 - this is a carryover year with welcome updates.

What Powertrains Are Available?

Mild Hybrid (MHEV): GS-L, GT, and GT-P trims use the e-Skyactiv G 3.3L inline-six turbo producing 280 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel, with fuel consumption of 9.9 L/100 km city, 8.4 L/100 km highway, and 9.3 L/100 km combined. The mild hybrid system smooths acceleration and improves efficiency, but can't drive on electric power alone.

Plug-In Hybrid (PHEV): GS SC, GS-L SC, GT PHEV, and Signature PHEV trims use the e-Skyactiv PHEV powertrain with 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. GS SC and GS-L SC offer 51 km electric-only range; GT PHEV and Signature PHEV offer 43 km. Fuel economy matches the MHEV at 9.3 L/100 km combined when the battery is depleted.

All CX-70 models include standard AWD and eight-speed automatic transmission.

How Much Does the CX-70 Cost?

Starting at $49,750 for the GS-L MHEV:

  • GS-L (MHEV): $49,750
  • GS SC (PHEV): $52,750
  • GT (MHEV): $54,350
  • GS-L SC (PHEV): $56,750
  • GT-P (MHEV): $58,300
  • GT (PHEV): $61,350
  • Signature (MHEV): $62,300
  • Signature (PHEV): $68,300

Premium paint adds $300 - $500; Garnet Red Nappa Leather interior adds $250.

What Features Come Standard?

The base GS-L includes a 12.3-inch Mazda Connect touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, eight-speaker audio, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, and hands-free power liftgate. Leatherette upholstery, 10-way power driver's seat, and dual-zone climate control are standard.

Safety features include Smart Brake Support, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control. PHEV GS SC adds 19-inch dark grey alloy wheels, rear spoiler, and "PHEV" badge.

What Do GT and Higher Trims Add?

GT (MHEV and PHEV): Upgrades to leather seating, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, eight-way power passenger seat, panoramic moonroof, windshield-projected Active Driving Display, Bose 12-speaker system, and Alexa built-in. Adds 360° View Monitor, front parking sensors, Traffic Sign Recognition, Front Cross Traffic Alert, and Driver Monitoring.

GT-P (MHEV only): Adds black Nappa leather, black headliner, metallic accents, frameless auto-dimming mirror with HomeLink, and Emergency Lane Keeping with Blind Spot Assist.

Signature (MHEV and PHEV): Features Windsor Tan Nappa Leather, Grand Luxe Suede dashboard and doors, Dark Arbor accents, and two-tone steering wheel. Includes Emergency Lane Keeping with Head-On Avoidance Assist, Smart Brake Support Front Crossing and Turn-Across Traffic, rear Pedestrian Detection, 360° View Monitor with See-Through View, Driver Personalization System, and 150-W AC outlet.

How Much Cargo Space Does It Have?

The CX-70 offers 1,131 litres behind the second row (1,122 with panoramic roof), expanding to 2,147 litres (2,132 with panoramic roof) with seats folded - enough for groceries, sports gear, camping equipment, or family luggage. The sub-trunk design adds extra compartments and hooks.

Is the PHEV Worth the Extra Cost?

With a short daily commute and home charging access, the PHEV saves on gas. The GS SC PHEV costs $3,000 more than the base GS-L MHEV but offers 51 km electric range - covering most city driving on electricity alone. The GT PHEV and Signature PHEV's 43 km range still handles many daily commutes under 40 km.

What About Towing?

The CX-70 tows up to 5,000 lb (2,268 kg) - enough for small boats, utility trailers, or campers. GT PHEV and Signature PHEV include Trailer Hitch View for easier backing.

How Does the CX-70 Handle British Columbia's Roads?

Standard i-Activ AWD monitors conditions and adjusts power distribution for better traction. Kinematic Posture Control uses light brake pressure during cornering to reduce body roll. The system handles winter conditions and gravel roads confidently.

Mi-Drive offers Normal, Sport, and Off-Road modes. Normal optimizes everyday driving and efficiency; Sport sharpens throttle response; Off-Road adjusts AWD and traction control for loose surfaces.

What Safety Features Are Included?

Base GS-L includes Smart Brake Support, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist, and Mazda Radar Cruise Control. GT and higher trims add Smart Brake Support with Front Crossing and Turn-Across Traffic, Cruising & Traffic Support, Emergency Lane Keeping, and 360° View Monitor with See-Through View.

Signature includes Head-On Avoidance Assist and rear Pedestrian Detection.

How Does the Interior Feel?

The CX-70's cabin feels premium beyond its price. Base GS-L features leatherette upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 12.3-inch touchscreen. The driver-focused layout includes physical controls for climate and volume.

GT and higher trims upgrade to leather seating, ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats. Signature adds Windsor Tan Nappa Leather, Grand Luxe Suede, and Dark Arbor accents. The windshield-projected Active Driving Display (GT and higher) shows speed and navigation in your line of sight.

Is the CX-70 a Good Value?

Starting at $49,750, the CX-70 includes wireless phone charging, 12.3-inch touchscreen, heated seats, and comprehensive safety tech. It offers more power, better materials, and more standard equipment at similar pricing.

PHEV trims add $3,000 - $6,000 but provide electric-only driving flexibility for short trips. With a short commute and home charging, the PHEV can pay for itself in fuel savings.
